Women didn't ask for free rides: Shiv Sena's Priyanka Chaturvedi slams Kejriwal

Mumbai/New Delhi, Jun 4 (IBNS): Opposing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's new move to make women's ride in public vehicles free of cost, Shiv Sena's Priyanka Chaturvedi said women didn't ask for free rides but safety.

She tweeted, "Hate to remind this, but Nirbhaya was gang raped in a bus in Delhi. At that time the country didn’t protest over free rides for the women but for making the capital safe for its women to be able to take a bus or metro at any time of the day. Get your priorities right!"

In a move to woo a section of voters ahead of the 2020 assembly polls, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government on Monday announced free of cost ride for all women in state transport vehicles.

The women of Delhi can travel free-of-cost in metros and state buses within the next two-three months.

"Now Delhi women can travel free-of-cost in Delhi Metro and DTC buses. The new system will be in place within the next two to three months," said state Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The AAP government's move is perceived as a strategy to woo voters as Delhi will go to state polls in 2020.

Though the AAP had a landslide victory in the last assembly elections, Kejriwal's party has failed to win even a single seat in Delhi in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls.

All the seven Lok Sabha seats were won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had won only three seats in the last state polls.

The AAP had won 67 out of 70 assembly seats in 2015.
