Women farmers' meet held at Chhaygaon in Assam’s Kamrup
Guwahati/IBNS: Aiming to strengthen women empowerment, Indian airline companies Indigo and Grameen Sahara have joined hands together to increase the income of around 1500 women farmers from the bordering areas of Assam and Meghalaya by promotion of various species like turmeric, ginger, black pepper, king chili.
Indigo and Grameen Sahara recently organized a farmers meet at Chhaygaon in Assam’s Kamrup district, where over 5000 farmers from different parts of the bordering areas of Assam and Meghalaya took part.
Sarat Chandra Das – Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Grameen Sahara said that around 5000 farmers of Assam and Meghalaya are benefited under the programme.
“We are now looking to extend our support to 1500 women farmers of the bordering areas of Assam and Meghalaya and aiming to give support to more farmers,” Sarat Chandra Das.
Kamrup district Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kamal Kumar Baishya, scientist Dr Sarat Saikia were also present in the farmers meet.
The project will cover 24 villages which are divided into four clusters (Chhaygaon, Bangaon of Assam and Zirang, Chaya Barduar of Meghalaya).
The project aims to increase the income of 1500 women farmers by an additional Rs 1.5 lakh per annum through cultivation of species.
The program is an attempt to organize these farmers and promote institutional building and help them get the deserving price for their produces in the market. Provision of supplier quality of seeds and planting materials which will aid in increasing their produces manifolds is another intervention of the project.
