Yediyurappa government has no value base to be in power: Congress' Abhishek Singhvi

New Delhi/IBNS: Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its alleged horse-trading, Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi on Wednesday said the BS Yediyurappa government in Karnataka has no "moral, legal, political value base to continue" as a response to the Supreme Court's upholding of the disqualification of 17 MLAs by then Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the disqualification of 17 Karnataka MLAs by Kumar but allowed them to contest the upcoming by-elections due to be held on Dec 5.

Singhvi, who was in the courtroom as a lawyer, said, "The stand of the former Speaker is vindicated by the Supreme Court."

Demanding the resignation of Yediyurappa, the Congress leader said, "The Yediyurappa government has no moral, legal and political value base to continue because it has used all ethical means to engineer defections."

Out of the 17 MLAs, 14 belong to the Congress while three were from the Janata Dal Secular (JDS).

"Those who preach us about values, they should walk the talk and practice what they preach," Singhvi said in strong words adding, "...Lotus Operation is occurring everywhere."

The Lotus Operation is a term used by the Opposition to refer to the BJP's alleged attempt to horse trade and topple governments.

The top court said the disqualified MLAs can hold ministries or public offices if elected in the upcoming by-polls.

The MLAs had turned rebel against the then Congress-JDS alliance government which was formed in 2018. They were disqualified by the Speaker just before the trust vote which was lost by then Chief Minister and JDS leader, HD Kumaraswamy.

The MLAs had then moved the Supreme Court.

After Kumaraswamy had lost the trust vote, the BJP assumed power with its leader BS Yediyurappa as the Chief Minister.

The by-polls will be held in 15 out of 17 seats fell vacant due to the disqualification of the MLAs.
