Adani Group to build Mumbai’s largest international convention centre

New Delhi: The Adani Group plans to invest around $2 billion to develop Mumbai’s largest international convention centre (ICC) near the international airport it operates, according to a report by Livemint.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the project’s overall design, with detailed blueprints expected to be cleared within two months, the report cited sources as saying.

Adani’s ICC will rival Reliance’s Jio World Convention Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a major business hub. Strategically located in Vile Parle near the international airport, the Adani facility aims to offer superior accessibility and visibility.

The proposed ICC will span 1.5 million square feet, accommodating up to 20,000 people.

Of this, 1.2 million square feet will be dedicated to indoor spaces, while 0.3 million square feet will be reserved for parking and ancillary facilities. The complex will also feature a five-star hotel with 275 rooms.

Currently, the Jio World Convention Centre holds the title of Mumbai’s largest convention venue with 1 million square feet of space.

However, India’s largest convention centre, Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, covers 3.2 million square feet. Unlike most of Adani’s real estate ventures managed by Adani Realty, the ICC will be owned and operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd.

Convention centres play a critical role in fostering trade and promoting exports by hosting exhibitions and conferences that connect local businesses with global markets.

Yashobhoomi, located in Dwarka, New Delhi, was designed to enhance India’s position in Asia’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) market, competing with cities like Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Rajesh Kumar Singh, chairman of India International Convention & Exhibition Centre Ltd, highlighted Yashobhoomi’s potential to generate over 500,000 jobs and expand India’s global market share.

Moreover, convention centres often bolster public goodwill for business groups. For instance, Mumbai’s Birla Matoshree has become an iconic venue for shareholder meetings, showcasing the community value such spaces provide.
