GST can't be imposed on petrol, diesel in pandemic time: Govt

New Delhi/IBNS: Petrol, diesel and ATF cannot be included under GST until India overcomes the COVID-19 pandemic, the 45th GST Council has decided.

There has been a longstanding demand to levy GST on petroleum products. However, this demand cannot be met until the coronavirus situation prevails, CNBC-TV18 reported.

The move will have serious revenue implications which also needs further discussions.

By law petrol, diesel and ATF are included in the GST Act but it is the Council's prerogative to decide on the inclusion of these products under GST.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said after the 45th GST Council meeting in September that this is not the right time to bring fuel products under GST.

The FM had also clarified that the matter had come up for deliberation during the meet.
