Hyundai Motor, Apple in talks about possible tie-up on electric vehicles: Reports

| @indiablooms | Jan 08, 2021, at 10:13 pm

Seoul/Sputnik: South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor has said that it is in talks with US tech giant Apple about possible partnership in developing electric vehicles and batteries, the Yonhap news agency reported on Friday.

"Hyundai is at an initial stage of talks with Apple for cooperation in developing an electric car but no decision has been made yet," a Hyundai official said, as quoted by the news outlet.

In a New Year's address in early January, Hyundai Motor Chairman Euisun Chung said that 2021 will be a "crucial inflection point" for the group, which will focus on "expanding market share in the eco-friendly market."

The company is planning to launch electric vehicles built on its own Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), including the IONIQ 5 model, this year. A battery of E-GMP vehicles is said to enable driving up to 500 kilometers (311 miles) with a fully charged battery and can high-speed charge up to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.

Apple, in turn, has been in talks on the EV project with several global car manufactures.
