India flags EU trade barriers, urges resolution amid FTA negotiation progress
New Delhi: India has raised concerns about the challenges faced by its domestic industries in accessing European Union (EU) markets, urging swift resolution of these issues, according to an official statement on Friday.
The matter, along with the progress of the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the two parties, was discussed during a virtual meeting between Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic.
"Minister Goyal underlined that non-tariff barriers were impeding trade and emphasized the need to address long-pending issues as a confidence-building measure," stated the commerce ministry.
Both sides agreed to work towards a balanced, equitable, ambitious, and mutually beneficial FTA.
After nine rounds of intensive negotiations, the FTA talks require strategic political direction to finalise an agreement that is commercially significant and mutually advantageous while considering each party’s sensitivities, the ministry added.
