Indian Market: Sensex up 240.98 points

Mumbai: The BSE Sensex on Monday gained 240.98 points to close at 65,628.14 on the strength of utilities, metals, IT, and technology stocks amid a positive Asian market.

The Nifty moved up 93.50 points to 19,528.80.

The Sensex opened higher at 65,525.91, rising 138 pts. It rallied 296 pts at 65,683.91, a day high, before closing at 65,628.14, surging 240.98 pts from its previous close.

In stocks, a major gainer was metal, up by 2.72 pts, followed by utilities by 1.91 pc, IT by 1.74 pc, power by 1.55 pc, and technology by 1.51 pts.

The midcap rose by 0.96 percent and the small cap by 0.84 percent.

In 30 scrips, 16 advanced while 14 declined.

The gainers were Wipro by 4.34 pc to Rs 434.05, HCL Technologies by 4.02 pc to Rs 1233, Ultracemco by 3.82 pc to Rs 8580.10, Tata Steel by 3.62 pc to Rs 131.70, and Tech Mahindra by 2.39 pc to Rs 1256.45.

The losers were M & M by 0.97 pc to Rs 1576.05, Axis Bank by 0.93 pc to Rs 982.10, ITC by 0.84 pc to Rs 437.55, and Asian Paints by 0.76 pc to Rs 3235.20.
