Guwahati, Jan 17k (IBNDS) : Karang, an island of Manipur, has become the first cashless island of the country.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has announced it under the digital India programme.

The Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur district said  the island of Loktak lake, the largest freshwater lake in North East India, has fulfilled  all necessary criteria to become cashless economy.

The DC of Bishnupur district said the campaign for cashless economy in the island was launched during  January 9-12 and the inhabitants extended their support to it.

"During the campaign, two organizations had extended their support on cashless transactions. Apart from the two organizations, the people of the island also supported it," the top administration official said.

"So far over 400 beneficiaries, 16 merchants have registered themselves for cashless transactions. We will provide them a card swipe machine within two weeks," the DC said.

After demonetisation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed the people of the nation to go for  cashless transactions and make a cashless society.

Following the PM's appeal, the Assam Government has already announced to go cashless  in all Government transactions.
