Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate several major development projects in Tamil Nadu during his visit to Thoothukudi on Saturday, including key railway electrification and doubling works amounting to ₹1,030 crore.

The PM will dedicate three significant railway infrastructure projects to the nation: the electrification of the 90 km Madurai–Bodinayakkanur line, doubling of the 21 km Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari stretch under the Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari corridor, and doubling of two additional sections—Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil Junction (12.87 km) and Tirunelveli–Melappalaiyam (3.6 km).

The Madurai–Bodinayakkanur segment, originally a metre gauge line, has been converted to broad gauge at a cost of ₹99 crore. This upgrade is expected to support sustainable transport, enhance tourism, and benefit key local stakeholders including farmers, students, and small traders in Madurai and Theni districts.

The doubling of tracks in Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari aims to significantly strengthen rail connectivity across southern Tamil Nadu.

According to an official release, these upgrades will enable more passenger and freight train operations, improving overall efficiency.

The doubling work on the Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari line alone accounted for ₹650 crore of the total expenditure and is considered a key segment of the broader Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari corridor.

The remaining two sections—Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil and Tirunelveli–Melappalaiyam—were completed at a combined cost of ₹283 crore, the release added.
