Bengaluru: Taiwan-headquartered electronics firm Wistron (ICT Service Management Solutions) and the Karnataka government inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday to set up a laptop manufacturing unit that may bolster job creation in the state, media reports said.

Karnataka’s minister of large and medium industries MB Patil said the deal involves an investment of Rs 1,500 crore by Wistron, which will lead to the creation of nearly 3,000 jobs.

The company has requested the state government to allot a land spanning 32 acres and the government is mulling providing it in the Bengaluru area, according to the minister.

"The globally leading company, known for providing technology services and products, plans to commence work related to setting up the plant in July 2024 and aims to start manufacturing laptops by January 2026," Patil was quoted as saying by Moneycontrol

He also asserted that this would be the first of its type laptop manufacturing plant in Karnataka.

"The unit, aligned with Industry 4.0 standards and featuring a fully automated facility, will produce laptops for all brands, with over 50% of the laptops manufactured here intended for export. Additionally, the plant will produce IoT components and EV-related parts," he added.

Patil said the development is not only about the production of electronic goods in the state but also about nurturing innovation, job creation, and positioning Karnataka as a top player in the electronics manufacturing industry.
