Vehicle tax waiver not for all cars: UP Govt likely to clarify on details of its hybrid car policy

Lucknow/IBNS: Days after announcing a complete waiver on road tax for hybrid cars, the Uttar Pradesh government is likely to issue a clarification on the details of its hybrid car policy, reports CNBC-TV18.

According to reports, the UP transport department will specify a vehicle price range for the road tax waiver in the next few days and any hybrid car which costs more than the price range would not be eligible.

CNBC-TV 18 reported, citing sources, that the clarification could specify that only cars costing up to Rs 20 lakh may qualify for the road tax waiver but a final decision is awaited.

On Thursday (July 11), the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department held a stakeholder consultation meeting with representatives of Mahindra Group, Toyota, Maruti and Tata Motors, and all companies shared their views on the policy for hybrid vehicles and how it impacts them individually, reports said.

After hearing their views, the UP transport department officials have asked all companies to submit their views in writing, as per reports.

However, officials in the UP Transport Department said that so far there is a status quo on the policy and road tax exemptions on hybrid cars are being given but a clarification is being prepared for RTOs across the state, as reported by CNBC-TV18.

A UP government official told CNBC-TV18, “We have to set a price limit. We cannot have a situation where cars costing over 40-50 lakhs are getting such incentives. We will set a limit soon."
