Bengal reports massive spike in Covid infections, over 1000 cases in last 24 hrs
Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal on Wednesday witnessed a major spike in Covid-19 cases amid the festive celebrations.
According to data provided by the state health department, 1089 fresh Covid cases and 12 more deaths were registered in the past 24 hours, while the state capital Kolkata recorded 540 new cases and three coronavirus related fatalities.
The positivity rate in the state, which was at 2.35 percent on Tuesday, has reached 2.84 percent.
West Bengal tested 38,375 samples in 155 testing facilities in the last 24 hours.
The state health department said 807 Covid patients were discharged from various health facilities in the last 24 hours, though the recovery rate has fallen slightly (from 98.33 pc to 98.32 pc).
Presently, there are 7727 active Covid patients in Bengal.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday directed the state health secretary to review the situation and said if necessary the educational institutions could be shut from the first week of the New Year, 2022.
Presiding over an administrative meeting with government officials, Banerjee asked state health secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam to report to her about the third wave of the pandemic.
If need be, schools and colleges could be shut from Jan 3, she said.
