Britain reports another daily surge of 88,376 new Covid cases amid Omicron spread
London/IBNS: The United Kingdom on Thursday reported a massive 88,376 new coronavirus cases, a second consecutive record daily infection, as the Omicron variant surge raises panic in the country.
The latest data takes the total number of infections during the pandemic to nearly 11.1 million.
A whopping figure of 146 deaths from the virus have been recorded, taking the death toll to almost 147,000.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had warned that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is "spreading at a rate we have not seen with any previous variant".
"77 countries have now reported cases of Omicron, and the reality is that Omicron is probably in most countries, even if it hasn’t been detected yet. Omicron is spreading at a rate we have not seen with any previous variant," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had said at a media briefing.
"We’re concerned that people are dismissing Omicron as mild. Surely, we have learned by now that we underestimate this virus at our peril. Even if Omicron does cause less severe disease, the sheer number of cases could once again overwhelm unprepared health systems," Ghebreyesus had said.
