Chicken pox strikes seven Bihar districts, vaccine not available in govt hospitals

Patna, March 23 (TheBiharPost/IBNS): Chicken pox, a highly contagious disease caused by the initial infection with varicella zoster virus, has struck Bihar in a virulent form at this time.

The period behind January to March is considered quite ideal for the spread of the chicken pox virus.

As per an official report, currently a total of seven districts are in the grip of this disease with Nalanda being the worst affected. Nalanda is home district of chief minister Nitish Kumar.

Reports said around 250 people are infected with the disease in the state.

A doctor at the medicine department in Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) Dr BP Sinha told a local media that average five persons are reaching the hospital for treatment.

However, the lack of varicella vaccine from the government hospitals has added to the woes of the pox victims.

“Chicken pox vaccines are not available in government hospitals since it is not included in the list of national immunization campaign,” a local immunization official Dr SP Vinayak told a local Hindi daily on Thursday.

According to health experts, Chickenpox is an airborne disease which spreads easily through the coughs and sneezes of an infected person. It may be spread from one to two days before the rash appears until all lesions have crusted over.

It usually starts on the chest, back, and face then spreads to the rest of the body. Other symptoms may include fever, feeling tired, and headaches. Symptoms usually last for five to ten days.
