Contaminated saline solution infected eyes of patients after cataract surgery at Kolkata hospital: Report
Kolkata/IBNS: At least 25 patients started experiencing complications following cataract surgery at a West Bengal government-run hospital in Kolkata's Metiabruz, which triggered the authorities to stop such operations temporarily, media reports said on Wednesday.
The cataract surgeries were performed on 35 patients last Friday and Saturday.
According to the primary report, the infection occurred due to using a contaminated saline solution for cleaning eyes.
Investigation has been started to nab those who were responsible.
The patients are mostly residents of Garden Reach, Metiabruz, and Nadiyal.
Soon after the opening of the bandage, many patients complained of blurry vision, pain and redness in the eye.
The hospital called all those who had undergone the procedure and sent 16 of them to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) Kolkata.
Locals claim that many of them have lost their vision.
The 16 patients are undergoing conservative treatment with antibiotics, media reports said.
They will be reviewed after 48 hours and if needed another surgery will be conducted.
