India once again witnesses massive spike: 3980 deaths, 4,12,262 fresh COVID-19 cases registered in past 24 hours
New Delhi: India registered 3980 COVID-19 related deaths in the past 24 hours, as per Ministry of Health released data on Thursday.
This is the highest number of deaths recorded by the country due to COVID-19.
After remaining in the over 3 lakh margin, India registered yet another day of massive spike as 4,12,262 daily cases were registered in the past 24 hours.
India is currently experiencing a deadly second wave of the virus which is believed to have originated from China.
The death toll due to the virus now stands at 23,01,68.
There are 35,66,398 active cases in the country at present.
During the past 24 hours, 3,29,113 people have been discharged.
A third wave of the coronavirus is "inevitable", the government's top scientific adviser warned on Wednesday as possibilities of a nationwide lockdown were discussed to break the chain of Covid surge in India.
"Phase 3 (third wave) is inevitable, given the high levels at which this virus is circulating. But it is not clear at what time scale this Phase 3 will occur," Dr K Vijay Raghavan was quoted as saying in media reports at a government briefing.
On being asked if a nationwide lockdown was the only solution to contain the unprecedented rise in cases, NITI Aayog member VK Paul said, "...If anything more is required those options are always being discussed. There's already a guideline to states to impose restrictions to suppress chain of transmission."
