India registers over 65,000 cases in 24 hours, tally crosses 2.5 million

New Delhi/IBNS: Even in the middle of Unlock 3.0, India on Saturday continued to register a huge number of Novel Coronavirus cases by adding over 65,000 infections in the last 24 hours.

The country of 1.3 billion people added fresh 65,002 Covid-19 cases, taking the overall tally to 25,26,193.

The Covid toll touched 49,036 with the reporting of 996 fresh fatalities in the span of 24 hours between Friday and Saturday mornings, the Indian Health Ministry's data said.

Over 65,000 cases were reported in India on a day the South Asian country is celebrating its 74th Independence Day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to the nation from Red Fort in the national capital New Delhi, said the scientists of his country are working to produce three vaccines to treat the contagion.

"Not one or two, three vaccines are at different levels of trial in our country. As soon as the scientists will give a green signal, the production of the vaccines will begin," the PM said besides paying tributes to the Coronavirus warriors.

Centre's face of contagion briefing Lav Agarwal tests positive for COVID-19

Meanwhile, the joint secretary of India's Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal, who was the face of the Union Health Ministry's Coronavirus briefings on television, has tested positive for the contagion.

Agarwal has isolated himself and also requested all who came in contact with him to undergo self-monitoring.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is apparently the second most important minister in the central government, has recovered from Covid-19.
