New Delhi/IBNS: Over 2.76 lakh new Coronavirus cases and close to four thousand deaths apparently linked to the virus were reported from 36 states and union territories of India on Thursday.

As per the Union Health Ministry's data. 2,76,110 new positive cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

The new infections pushed the overall tally of infections to 2,57,72,440.

With 3,874 deaths apparently caused due to the contagion, the Covid-19 toll has surged to 2,87,122 in the same period.

At a time India is devastated by the second wave of the virus, the Union Health Ministry has recognised the importance of the widespread vaccination though the Narendra Modi government is facing the largest pie of the criticism over its alleged unpreparedness to contain the virus.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday said India will procure 267 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses by the end of this year and will be in a position to inoculate the entire adult population of the country.

He said the government is making all efforts to enhance production and supply of existing vaccines.

"Govt led by Hon'ble PM Sh@narendramodi Ji is leaving no stone unturned to support development of new #COVID19Vaccines & enhancing production & supply of existing ones. By the end of this year, we shall have enough doses for our entire adult population," Harsh Vardhan said.
