New Delhi/IBNS: Mumbai witnessed a massive jump of 47 percent in daily Covid cases as the city reported 5,428 infections alone in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra too saw a daily case spike of 50 percent and recorded 8,067 infections.

The state also reported eight deaths during the same period.

Meanwhile four 'highly transmissible' Omicron variant's cases were also detected in the same duration.

To curb the spread of the virus, the state administration has made beaches, sea faces, promenades, parks and other public places of the metropolis off-limits to the general public between 5 pm to 5 am till Jan 15.

Large gatherings have also been banned under an order of the Mumbai Police which came into force from 1 pm on Friday and will remain till Jan 15.

A jump in daily infections in the country - especially in big cities - has sparked fresh worry.

India on Friday recorded 16,764 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, which is 43 percent higher than Thursday's tally, according to the Health Ministry data released on Friday.

The country has logged over 1,200 Omicron cases so far - a large number of these have been reported from Maharashtra and Delhi.
