Windhoek/Xinhua: Namibia is looking into the death of 16 buffaloes that were found floating in a river inside the Bwabwata National Park in the northeast Zambezi region, an official said on Monday.

According to Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism spokesperson Romeo Muyunda, the carcasses of the dead animals were found in the Kwando river last Wednesday.

"The buffaloes are suspected to have drowned, possibly fleeing from predators. The ministry has commissioned an investigation into the matter," Muyunda said.

An outbreak of a bovine disease is also suspected, he said, adding that tissue and blood samples have been collected for analysis.
