New Delhi, Jan 21 (IBNS): Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the interim budget before the Lok Sabha polls on Feb 1, media reports said.

Amid speculation that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who is in the US for treatment, might not be able to present the budget this year, top government sources have told NDTV that he will return to present the interim budget on Feb 1.

According to reports, he is currently in the US for the medical check-up.

The medical trip had fuelled speculations whether Jaitley will be able to present the budget on Feb 1.

As per media reports, there could be some key announcement for the middle class and the farmers of the nation in the interim budget.

Sources told NDTV that the agriculture sector can expect schemes that are aimed at unburdening farmers and increasing their incomes.

The Union Budget was presented on the last working day of February till 2016.

However, Jaitley changed the norm from 2017 when he tabled it on Feb 1.

The interim budget remains in force for a shorter period of time.

The new government, formed after the Lok Sabha polls are held after five years, presents the new budget.

The Parliament will meet from Jan 31 to Feb 13 for the budget session.
