Dixon to make HP laptops in Tamil Nadu under ₹1,000 cr deal
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has signed an MoU with Dixon Technologies to establish a manufacturing facility for HP laptops and all-in-one PCs.
The plant will come up at the Indospace Industrial Park in Oragadam, close to Chennai.
₹1,000 crore investment to generate 5,000 jobs
State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa called it a major step forward in the state’s electronics manufacturing drive. “HP laptops, soon to be #MadeInTamilNadu!” he wrote on social media, adding that the project will involve an investment of ₹1,000 crore (about $115 million) and is expected to create 5,000 jobs.
Dixon expands beyond North and South India
Dixon Technologies, a contract manufacturer for leading global brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, OnePlus, and others, currently operates production units in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh.
The Tamil Nadu unit will further expand its footprint across India.
State pushes for $1 trillion economy
The Tamil Nadu government said it has signed 895 MoUs with companies since May 2021, garnering investment commitments of over ₹10.14 lakh crore and creating around 32 lakh jobs.
The state, which is India’s second-largest economy, is aiming to touch the $1 trillion mark by the end of this decade.
India’s electronics sector sees rapid growth
India’s electronics manufacturing output has soared over the last ten years — from ₹2.4 lakh crore in 2014 to ₹9.8 lakh crore in 2024.
Mobile phone manufacturing alone accounts for ₹4.4 lakh crore, with exports reaching ₹1.5 lakh crore.
The government says 98% of mobile phones used in India are now made domestically, and smartphones have become the country’s fourth-largest export item.
Tamil Nadu major beneficiary of PLI scheme
Tamil Nadu hosts more than 47 electronics manufacturing units supported under central government schemes.
The state is also a key beneficiary of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics — particularly under PLI 2.0 for IT hardware, launched in May 2023. Of the 27 units approved so far, seven are based in Tamil Nadu.
The scheme offers a 5% incentive and covers laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs, servers and ultra-compact devices.
