
Govt appoints NCAER’s Poonam Gupta as RBI Deputy Governor for three-year term
New Delhi: The government has approved the appointment of Poonam Gupta, Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term, PTI reported, citing sources.
The position had been vacant since M.D. Patra’s tenure ended in January.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) sanctioned Gupta’s appointment, which will take effect from the date she assumes office at the RBI, the report said, quoting sources. However, her joining date has not yet been confirmed, it added.
Gupta, an economist with extensive experience in economic policy, leads NCAER, India’s largest economic policy think tank.
She is also a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and the Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.
Before joining NCAER in 2021, she spent nearly two decades in senior roles at the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, D.C.
Beyond her administrative roles, Gupta has taught at several leading institutions, including the Delhi School of Economics, the University of Maryland (USA), and ISI Delhi as a visiting faculty member.
She has also held academic positions as the RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and as a Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).
Gupta holds both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA, as well as a Master’s in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.
Her academic contributions were recognised with the 1998 EXIM Bank Award for her PhD thesis on international economics.
