India crosses historic 5 lakh km power grid mark, supercharging renewable energy

India’s national power transmission network has achieved a major milestone, crossing 5 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines at 220 kV and above, along with a transformation capacity of 1,407 GVA.

The world’s largest synchronous national grid reached this landmark on January 14, 2026, following the commissioning of a 628 ckm, 765 kV transmission line connecting Bhadla II and Sikar II substations. The line enables evacuation of renewable energy from the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone and will facilitate the transfer of an additional 1,100 MW of power from the Bhadla, Ramgarh, and Fatehgarh Solar Power Complexes.

Since April 2014, India’s transmission network has expanded by 71.6%, with the addition of 2.09 lakh ckm of transmission lines (220 kV and above). During the same period, transformation capacity has increased by 876 GVA. The country’s inter-regional power transfer capacity, now at 1,20,340 MW, has enabled seamless electricity flow across regions, successfully realizing the vision of “One Nation – One Grid – One Frequency.”

Currently, Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) projects under implementation are expected to add around 40,000 ckm of transmission lines and 399 GVA of transformation capacity. In addition, Intra-State Transmission projects will contribute another 27,500 ckm of transmission lines and 134 GVA of capacity, further strengthening grid reliability and power evacuation capabilities.

The continued expansion of transmission infrastructure will play a critical role in evacuating India’s rapidly growing non-fossil power generation, which is targeted to reach 500 GW by 2030.

The achievement of 5,00,000 ckm of transmission lines underscores the Government’s sustained efforts to ensure a reliable, affordable, and secure electricity supply, while supporting the large-scale integration of renewable energy across the country.
