Indian Railways floats tender inviting pvt players to make 80,000 wheels annually

The India Railways Friday floated tender inviting bids from private players for setting up a wheel plant with a capacity of manufacturing at least 80,000 wheels annually, according to media reports.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said a blueprint has been drawn to export wheels. He added that this is the first time private entities have been invited to build a unit and manufacture wheels for high-speed trains in India.

According to the plan, while SAIL will provide one lakh of the two lakh wheels needed by the railways every year, the rest will be manufactured by a new "Make in India" plant.

Addressing a press conference, Vaishnaw said the tender will be awarded on the condition that the manufacturing plant will be an exporter of wheels too for the European market.

The other condition of the tender is that the plant has to be set up in 18 months, the minister added.

The wheels of the high-speed Vande Bharat trains were stuck in war-hit Ukraine and those had to be airlifted to meet the timelines set for their production.
