New Delhi, Jul 31 (IBNS) : The Income Tax Department has extended by five days the last date for filing of income tax returns (ITRs) for the financial year 2016-17, reports said.

The date has been extended to August five from the  original deadline of July 31.

"In view of the difficulties faced by taxpayers, date for filing of Income Tax Returns for FY 2016-17 has been extended to 5th August, 2017," Income Tax India twitter announced.

According to reports, the  Income Tax Department has already received over two crore returns filed electronically.

NDTV has quoted a Government official as saying that the  tax department's e-filing website - incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in - has been experiencing overload due to last minute filing of returns.
