Passenger vehicle sales drop by 50 pc in June amid coronavirus lockdown

Mumbai/IBNS: Car and sports utility vehicle (SUV) sales in the country dropped 49.59 per cent last month compared to the same period last year, said Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) as coronavirus induced lockdown worsened the prevailing weak demand, said a media report.

The two-month-long lockdown triggered by the coronavirus situation kept people away from shelling out money for big purchases impacting the sales.

The sale of passenger car sales plummeted 58 per cent to 55,497 in June from last year while the sale of two-wheelers fell 39 percent, said SIAM, reported NDTV.

Total export figures also indicated a gloomy picture. Export of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers witnessed a decrease of 56.31 per cent, 34.98 per cent and 34.25 per cent respectively this June, as compared to June last year, SIAM added.

"Inordinate delays in clearance due to congestion at ports could eventually impact manufacturing of vehicles in India. The industry is piecing itself together as growth is limping back; any further disruption at this juncture is best avoided," Rajan Wadhera, president, SIAM was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The report said data on BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo Auto was not available and only quarterly data for Tata Motors could be accessed, according to SIAM.
