Tech turmoil at Amazon: 1,800 engineers part of massive layoff

Amazon has announced major layoffs, with engineers bearing the brunt of the cuts, according to reports.

In October, the e-commerce giant revealed plans to eliminate 14,000 jobs across nearly all business segments.

Documents filed in New York, California, New Jersey, and Washington showed that roughly 40% of the more than 4,700 job cuts in those states involved engineering roles, CNBC reported.

The data, submitted through Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings, represents only a portion of the total layoffs.

Human Resources chief Beth Galetti said in a memo that the company aims to innovate more efficiently with a leaner workforce.

“This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet,” she wrote, emphasizing the need for fewer layers and more ownership to move quickly for customers and business.

Amazon joins other tech firms in large-scale layoffs this year.

According to Layoffs.fyi, 231 tech companies have reduced staff in 2025. Earlier, Microsoft announced multiple rounds of layoffs totaling 9,000 employees, roughly 4% of its global workforce.
