New Delhi/IBNS:  The viability of inland water transport is being ensured by undertaking various projects, Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways  Sarbananda Sonowal has informed the Parliament.

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has been undertaking various measures, like construction of terminals/ jetties, Ro-Ro terminals, Multi-modal terminals, fairway development and maintenance, channel stabilization works, river information system and provision of navigational aids, etc. on various National Waterways, Sonowal said in a written reply to Parliament.

The viability of inland water transport is also being ensured through inter-modal and multi-modal connectivity (Rail/ Road) of IWT terminals, he added.

A Project Oversight Committee (POC) consisting of members of state governments of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal was constituted in March 2019 for monitoring projects taken up for implementation under Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) on National Waterway-1(NW-1) from Haldia to Varanasi (1390 km).

The first meeting of the POC was held in June 2019 and thereafter meetings are held from time to time as per requirement.
