Who is Mira Murati, 34-yr-old engineer, OpenAI's new chief
San Francisco: Mira Murati, 34, assumed the role of Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, in May 2022.
In a shocking decision, OpenAI on Friday sacked CEO Sam Altman, and hours later Greg Brockman, another co-founder of the firm, also quit.
The company said OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will serve as the interim CEO.
She has played a crucial role in steering OpenAI's strategy, particularly in the public testing of its tools.
Widely regarded as the effective head of operations by current and former employees, Murati has overseen the timely development of various versions of ChatGPT by the engineering team.
Her responsibilities also extended to managing OpenAI's relationship with Microsoft, a key investor and partner deploying its technology.
Murati has been also instrumental in shaping OpenAI's artificial intelligence policy in both Washington and Europe.
Despite ongoing advancements in AI research, especially in areas like natural language processing and computer vision over the past decade, many breakthroughs have remained confined within the secretive projects of tech giants.
Mira Murati is a mechanical engineer. Born in Albania, Murati was raised in Canada by her Indian-origin parents.
Her engineering skills were highlighted with a hybrid race car she designed when she was at Dartmouth College.
Murati has a diverse professional background, having worked in aerospace, automotive, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR).
Subsequently, she joined Tesla, led by Elon Musk, as a senior product manager, making significant contributions to the development of the Model X.
She was also affiliated with Leap Motion, a VR company, where her focus lay in applying artificial intelligence to practical, real-world situations.
She knows three languages—Italian, Albanian, and English.
In 2018, Murati joined OpenAI, assuming the role of overseeing supercomputing strategy and managing research teams.
She played a crucial role as a member of the leadership team, actively contributing to the implementation of team decisions.
In the past year, Murati took on the responsibility of managing the distribution of ChatGPT.
