World Forum of Fisher Peoples meet in New Delhi for their seventh general assembly

New Delhi, Nov 15 (IBNS): The Seventh General Assembly of World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP) began in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Activists and leaders from 42 countries dedicated to justice for fishers are attending the General Assembly in New Delhi, the organisation said on its Facebook page..

The event was inaugurated by  the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Naik, and the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh.

Minister Radha Mohan Singh also released a book at the inaugural session.

WFFP was initiated in Delhi on World Fisheries Day, November 21, 1997.

According to the organisation, around 50 WFFP members are from the Global South and many of them represent Indigenous communities, who are traditional, small-scale, artisanal fishers.

WFFP is also a member of the Planning Committee of the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty, and the Civil Society Mechanism (CSM) of the UN Committee on World Food Security.
