Bengal's Covid-19 tally surpasses 34000-mark with highest one-day spike of 1589 cases, death count reaches 1000

Kolkata/IBNS: With the highest single-day spike of 1,589 infections, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in West  Bengal has jumped to 34,427 while the Covid-19 death toll in the state has touched 1000 mark with 20 more fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, the state health department said on Wednesday.

The department said that Bengal had 12,747 active Covid-19 cases till date while 749 more patients were discharged from various health facilities across the state, taking the total number of recoveries to 20,680.

According to a bulletin issued by the West Bengal Health and Family Welfare (WBHFW) department, the recovery rate of Covid-19 patients has further dropped to 60.06 per cent from 60.69 per cent.

West Bengal has tested 6,49,928 samples till date with 11,388 tests conducted in 52 testing facilities across the state in the last 24 hours, reports said.

Currently, 4,033 persons are kept in government quarantine centres and 24,303 people are under home surveillance in the state.

Meanwhile, the state government on Wednesday announced to enforce a seven-day comprehensive town-wide lockdown in Siliguri Municipal Corporation area in North Bengal from 9 am on Thursday (July 16) to contain the spread of novel coronavirus, officials said. 

"All government and private offices (except the offices providing essential and emergency services, or involved in Covid-19 management), all market complexes and shops selling non-essential items, and all industrial activities involving in non-essential activities will remain closed while all religious, social and other non-essential activities will be prohibited for next seven days in Siliguri city," officials said.
