Canada reports massive spike in Covid cases amid Omicron variant's spread worldwide
Ontario/IBNS: As the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 is spreading across nations, Canada's Ontario recorded 18,445 fresh infections on Saturday, which is an increase from 16,713 new cases reported on New Year's Eve.
Infectious disease experts have told mediapersons that the actual number of new cases is likely to be far higher than those reported each day.
Meanwhile, Quebec reported a whopping 17,122 new cases of the virus.
Outdoor New Year's Eve celebrations in the province were prohibited as a measure to combat the spread.
New restrictions also include banning nearly all indoor gatherings and the closing of restaurant dining rooms.
Records of new infections were also high in Nunavut, which reported 50 new cases, and Newfoundland and Labrador, which logged 442 new infections.
To combat the surge, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for boosting up of vaccinations.
In an address to the media, Trudeau said Canadians will need to continue working together to end the pandemic.
He added that the "strength, determination and compassion" the citizens have demonstrated over the past year will "keep inspiring and guiding us in the new year."
