COVID-19 could become a sesonal disease, says top scientist: Reports

Washington/IBNS: The novel coronavirus could resurface in seasonal cycles and a vaccine and effective treatment would be key in overcoming the outbreaks in future, according to a senior US scientist, reported AFP.

Anthony Fauci who heads research in infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health has said the virus is increasing intensity in the Southern Hemisphere where the winter is about to begin, said the report.

The countries in Southern Hemisphere and south Africa coronavirus cases are appearing as winter is approaching these parts of the world, he pointed out.

If these areas have substantial outbreak, a second outbreak could be inevitable around the same time the outbreak occurred last year, he said.

Underscoring the possible emergence of the outbreak, he said the efforts in developing and testing vaccine for  COVID-19 quickly and getting it ready would ensure preparedness for the next cycle of the deadly contagion.

Currently there are two vaccines--one in China and one in the US-- that are undergoing human trial. However, both the vaccines are at least a year or a year-and-a-half away from deployment, said the report.

The AFP report said Fauci's comments follow a recent Chinese research paper that said coronavirus weakens in hot and humid weather.
