Covid19: WHO suspends UN supply for Bharat Biotech's Covaxin

Geneva: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has suspended the supply of Covaxin made by Indian manufacturer Bharat Biotech to upgrade facilities and address deficiencies revealed in an inspection, media reports said.

Reuters reported that WHO has asked the countries that have received the vaccine to take appropriate steps according to the findings but did not specify what the required measures are.

However, the health body mentioned that the vaccine is effective and that there are no safety concerns linked to it.

It said that the suspension comes after the WHO post-emergency use listing (EUL) inspection conducted from March 14 to 22.

WHO said that Bharat Biotech has confirmed its commitment to the suspension of vaccine production for export.

The WHO said that the company has "committed to comply by addressing the GMP deficiencies and is developing a corrective and preventive action plan, for submission to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI)and WHO".

On Friday, Bharat Biotech said it was slowing vaccine production due to reduced demand along with a fall in infections and a wider vaccination drive run by the government.
