Srinagar/UNI: Heat wave returned due to surge in the maximum temperature even though night remains slightly cold after maximum temperature settled below normal in the Kashmir valley.

The weather will remain mainly dry over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours, a Met department spokesman told UNI Friday evening.

He said there will be no large change in the weather during the subsequent 48 hours.

After witnessing pleasant weather during the past about a week as mercury remained below normal, heat waves returned in the Kashmir valley, where the maximum temperature recorded a surge even as the night temperature was still below normal.

In Srinagar, where restrictions continued for the second day on Friday as a precautionary measure following the death of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Wednesday night, the maximum temperature witnessed several degree surge.

Against yesterday's maximum temperature of 29 degree, on Friday it was 31.2 degree which was 2.7 notches above normal.

However, the minimum temperature was 14.6 degrees, which was 0.4 degree below normal.

Due to the suspension of the internet, the weather report of famed ski resort of Gulmarg was not available, spokesman said.

Pahagam, a famed tourist destination, recorded 27.1 degree maximum temperature which was 2.6 degree above normal while the minimum temperature was 10.3 degree, 0.2 degree below normal.

The water level in river Lidder, passing through Pahalgam has again witnessed increase as snow on the mountains has started melting.

Qazigund recorded the maximum temperature 29.3 degrees, 2.3 degrees above normal while the temperature was 13.7 degrees, slightly above normal. Kupwara witnessed 31 degree (1.4 degree above normal) and Kokernag 27.9 degree (1.7 degree above normal) maximum temperature while the minimum was 10.3 degree at Kupwara and 12.1 degree at Kokernag.
