India's heaviest satellite launched, Narendra Modi congratulates scientists
New Delhi, Dec 5 (IBNS): In a major achievement, India’s heaviest satellite GSAT 11, weighing 5,854 kg, was launched from Kourou space centre in French Guiana by European commercial launch provider Arianespace on Wednesday.
The satellite was also called the "Big Bird ".
It was launched at 2.07 am (IST).
It is going to provide satellite-based internet to remote places where cable-based internet cannot reach and supply the facility to people.
"Succesful #GSAT11 mission acheived with big support from @Arianespace. Credit also for #TeamISRO," said ISRO chief K Sivan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the move as a 'major milestone' in India's space programme.
"A major milestone for our space programme, which will transform the lives of crores of Indians by connecting remote areas! Congrats to @isro for the successful launch of GSAT-11, which is the heaviest, largest and most-advanced high throughput communication satellite of India," he tweeted.
