Bengaluru, June 6 (UNI): The Karnataka health department has sounded high alert in the state following the outbreak of the Nipah virus in the neighbouring Kerala state.

In Kerala, seven people are being treated in the ICU and more than 300 have been quarantined. This has spurred worry that the virus may spread to the neighbouring states.

Karnataka health department assistant director Dr B.G. Prakash Kumar has directed all the government hospital heads in the districts bordering Kerala to be on high alert and send reports every day without fail.

He has asked the general public to delay as far as possible their visits to Kerala.

Dr Kumar has asked heads of Hassan, Chamarajanagara and Mysuru districts to take all precautionary measures if anybody reported the symptoms of Nipah virus and send immediate report to the state health department.
