Beirut/Sputnik/UNI: The first death due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was registered in Lebanon, the LBC broadcaster reported on Tuesday.

To date, the country has registered 40 cases of the disease, it said.

Last week, the Lebanese authorities ordered the closure of theaters and museums, and canceled conferences to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. For the same reason, classes in all educational institutions were canceled. Prior to that, the authorities announced the closure of all public parks.

To date, the number of people who have contracted the coronavirus disease globally has exceeded 114,000, with over 4,000 fatalities.

The virus has spread to more than 100 countries since emerging in China in December, according to Johns Hopkins University.
