Mexico City, Feb 17 (IBNS): A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.2 hit Mexico on Friday, damaging several buildings, though no deaths were reported.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the quake was near the town of Pinotepa de Don Luis in Oaxaca state.

No tsunami threat was issued either.

Meanwhile, Friday's tremors forced several Mexicans to flee their residences and gather on the streets.

Earthquake alert systems were activated in at least five states, including Mexico City, the national capital.

Local officials have urged residents to stay outdoors in these places.
