Google decorates homepage with doodle to mark Gauhar Jaan's birth anniversary
New York, June 26 (IBNS): Popular search engine Google on Tuesday decorated its homepage with a doodle to mark the birth anniversary of musician and dancer Gauhar Jaan.
Jaan was the first Indian to record music on a 78 rpm record.
In 1873, Jaan was born on this day.
Having recorded more than 600 records in more than ten languages between 1902 to 1920, Gauhar Jahan, who was from Kolkata, is credited with popularising Hindustani classical music such as thumri, dadra, kajri, tarana during the period.
She passed away on Jan 17, 1930.
In today's doodle, Gauhar's illustrated avatar could be seen with her cat, and the gramaphone in the background.
Google often decorates its homepage with attractive doodles to mark special events, dates and birth anniversary of celebrities.
