Infosys Science Foundation hosts workshop for mathematics, science teachers
Mysore, Aug 2 (IBNS): The Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) will organize 'Gnanadeepa', a workshop for middle school mathematics and science teachers from rural Karnataka, at the Infosys campus in Mysore from Aug 2 to 12.
This program is aimed at providing teachers a four-point framework that can be used to effectively convey any concept in mathematics and science to students.
The program is expected to have participation from 680 teachers from government schools in rural Karnataka.
Teachers often confine themselves to text books in explaining concepts. The training workshop, going beyond text books, will provide a broad framework that can be used as a tool to explain these concepts, encourage curiosity, and promote experiential learning.
The 10-day workshop, to be largely conducted in Kannada, will include sessions on creative communications and concepts from higher primary school mathematics and science syllabi.
Trainers will first demonstrate how a framework can be applied to selected concepts and invite teachers to use the framework to demonstrate other concepts from their syllabus.
The modes of teaching in the workshop will include computer simulations, model building, stories, ‘Science in the News’ sessions, magic tricks, historical and mythological references, as well as movie clips. Teachers will also be able to browse the Internet at a dedicated cyber cafe set up for them.
At the end of the program, each participant will be given a kit with models similar to those used to demonstrate concepts during the workshop. Also, for up to 6-8 months following the workshop, the participant teachers will have access to a phone helpline to clarify doubts or seek ideas on how to present concepts using the framework taught.
Infosys and the Infosys Science Foundation will provide food, accommodation, a travel allowance and a daily allowance to the participants.
N. R. Narayana Murthy, President of the Board of Trustees said, “The future of India depends upon the quality of education imparted to her children. There are an estimated 43,447 government primary schools and 3,029 government high schools in the state of Karnataka. The teachers at these schools play an important role in influencing and molding the minds of their young students."
"Enabling these teachers will have a multiplier effect in reaching hundreds of thousands of students. The Gnanadeepa program is an initiative to inspire and enable teachers to engage with their students, instil curiosity and improve the grasp of fundamental concepts in mathematics and science. A sound understanding and innovative application of these concepts will provide the building blocks of development in our society," he said.
