Kolkata: Indian classical vocalist and Padma Bhushan awardee Ajoy Chakrabarty has composed and dedicated a new raag, "Maitree" on the occasion of Bangabandh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary and Bangladesh’s 50 Independence Day.

The new raag composed by the virtuoso from the Patiala Kasur Gharana has been named “Maitri” to celebrate the longstanding friendship between India and Bangladesh along with the shared history and culture of the two countries.

Along with the raag, three new songs have been written in Sanskrit, Hindi and Bangla set to raag Maitri and will be unveiled performed by the great vocalist during the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh on the 26th of March.

PM Modi will be undertaking his first overseas visit since the outbreak of COVID-19 on the invitation of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to participate in the Bangladesh’s 50th Independence Day celebrations.

Philosopher Dr Arindam Chakraborti has composed the Sanskrit lyrics for the song while the Hindi portion is composed by Dr Susmita Basu Majumder.

The Bengali song has been penned by Chakrabarty’s student and prominent composer Anal Chatterjee.

The songs are homage to Bangladesh’s Independence movement and Sheikh MujiburRahman popularly known as Bangabandhu whose birth centenary is also being celebrated.

Ajoy Chakrabarty shares a special connection with Bangladesh as his parents were born in Bangladesh and moved to Kolkata during the partition in 1947.
