Vijay Kelkar the new President of Indian Statistical Institute

Kolkata, Sept 23 (IBNS): Vijay Kelkar has been elected as the President of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI).

The Institute announced the appointment of Vijay Kelkar in its General Body Meeting held on Sept 14.

Indian Statistical Institute is an Institute of national importance, working under the aegis of Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of Indian.

The President of the Institute is elected by its members for a period of two years.

Vijay Kelkar succeeds C. Rangarajan, who was the President of the Institute since September 2012.

Vijay Kelkar is an engineer, economist and academician who has done his M.S. from University of Minnesota, USA, 1965 and Ph.D. in Economics from University of California, Berkeley, USA, 1970.

He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in January 2011.

He has held various senior-level positions in the Government of India, as well as in international organisations.

Prominent among these appointments are Chairman, Finance Commission of India, Secretary, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, Advisor, Economic Policy & Planning, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Economic Advisor, Ministry of Commerce.

He is presently serving as the Chairman of the Forum of Federations, Ottawa & India Development Foundation, New Delhi.
