11 bills meet approval, Centre criticized for rushing
New Delhi/UNI: The winter session of the Parliament passed 11 bills in both its houses and secured a 82 percent productivity rate in Lok Sabha and 48 percent in Rajya Sabha.
Lok Sabha lost around 18 hours 48 minutes to disruptions and worked only over 83 hours, while Rajya Sabha worked for 45 hours 34 minutes out of the scheduled 95 hours during the winter session which concluded Wednesday.
The session had begun with a cloud over its crown, as 12 Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament (MP) were suspended.
The session had only 18 sittings in 24 days, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Praladh Joshi.
In the Lok Sabha, 563 MPs raised matters of urgent public importance, which translated to 70 MPs raising issues in Zero Hour every day.
Amongst the 13 bills that were introduced, 11 got approved.
The bills included the Farm Laws Repeal Bill 2021, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, Dam Safety Bill, Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulations) Bill, High Court and Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Amendment Bill, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Bill, Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill, and the Central Vigilance Commission (Amendment) Bill.
The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 that got passed linked electoral roll data with the Aadhaar ecosystem to curb the menace of multiple enrolment of the same person in different places.
Another bill of significance that progressed was The Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill.
It provides for regulation of surrogacy services in the country to prohibit exploitation of surrogate mothers and protects rights of children born through it.
The opposition vehemently criticized the nature of all parliament sittings and blamed the Centre to be very fast forward in terms of approving bills in the Parliament.
TMC MP Derek O Brien after facing suspension from Rajya Sabha tweeted, "Parliament sessions ends, every single day washed out by government who will now spend the afternoon doing press conferences justifying cold-blooded murder of democracy. When the opposition did get the odd chance to speak, we gave the government a masterclass from the rule book."
The Government defended itself by stating that the opposition was in fact responsible for creating trouble during the session.
Responding to the opposition's remarks, Praladh Joshi said, "It’s a baseless allegation. The Opposition should have let the house run."
