13 electrocuted across West Bengal in last four days amid heavy rain
Kolkata/IBNS: At least 13 deaths due to electrocution have been reported from different parts of West Bengal in the last four days as several areas in the state continue to remain waterlogged following heavy rain since Monday early hours.
According to reports, all the victims— aged between 12 years to 65 years— came in contact with active electric wires submerged in the water due to the massive downpour.
Heavy rains due to a cyclonic circulation had lashed Kolkata and its neighbouring districts, leaving many areas waterlogged.
The incidents of electrocution were reported from mainly three districts— North 24 Parganas, Malda and East Medinipur.
Monday (Sept 20):
Two men, identified as Pradip Maity (31) and Nandan Mondal (26), died of electrocution on Monday night at Itaberia under Bhupatinagar Police Station limits in Bhagabanpur-I community development block area in East Medinipur district.
Tuesday (Sept 21):
An eighth-standard student, Hiralal Roy (15), was electrocuted on a waterlogged road at Mohanpur Uttarpara area under Titagarh Police Station limits in North 24 Parganas district on Tuesday morning.
Three members of a family, Raja Das (39), his wife Poulami Das (35) and their elder son Subha Das (11), died of electrocution on Tuesday night inside their waterlogged room in North 24 Parganas' Khardaha.
Wednesday (Sept 22):
Two classmates, Anushka Nandi (14) and Sneha Banik (12), were electrocuted after touching an electricity post on a waterlogged street in Kolkata's neighbourhood Dumdum on Wednesday afternoon.
Another incident was reported from Gazole in Malda district where one Haraprasad Bhattacharya died of electrocution while going to his farm.
A 65-year-old man, Dipak Chowdhury, was electrocuted at Tarapukur area in North 24 Parganas' Agarpara on Wednesday night.
Thursday (Sept 23):
Sona Roy (40), a labourer with the Texmaco Rail and Engineering Ltd, died of electrocution while he was performing his duties at the waterlogged premise of the factory in North 24 Parganas' Belgharia on Wednesday morning.
Two deaths due to electrocution were reported from Malda on Wednesday— One Siddiqui Sheikh (60) died after coming in contact with an active open wire at Sarafat Tola under Mothabari Police Station's jurisdiction while a housewife, identified as Tulsi Singh, was electrocuted at Rishipur village under Habibpur PS limits.
West Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim expressed his condolences to the victims' families and said that the state government will extend all support to them.
Government officials have alerted the electricity supply authorities to be more careful during the rainy and waterlogging season while general people have been asked to be more cautious in the waterlogged areas to avoid such incidents as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more rainfall activities in south Bengal districts in coming days.
