13 schoolchildren die as train rams school bus in UP's Kushinagar

Gorakhpur, Apr 26 (IBNS): A train rammed a school bus at an unmanned level crossing in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar, killing at least 13 schoolchildren and injuring eight others, reports said.

The incident took place at around 7 am on Thursday morning.

The deceased have been identified as pupils of Divine Public School.

The bus was carrying around 25 children, when the accident took place.

Most of the deceased as said to be aged below 10 years.

Reports said the among the eight injured, seven are said to be in a critical stage and presently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Meanwhile, commenting on the incident, an Indian Railways spokesperson has blamed negligence on the part of the van driver, who despite being warned by the gate operator, refused to listen.

"He [the driver] didn't pay any heed, this is a case of pure negligence," the spokesperson said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered an investigation, while announcing a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh for the families of the children.
