22 killed, 150 injured as train derails in Rae Bareili

Rae Bareli, Mar 20 (IBNS): At least 22 people were killed and 150 others injured when two coaches and the engine of Dehradun-Varanasi Janta Express derailed in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli district on Friday.

The accident took place around 9.30 am as the train was coming to a stop at the Bachhrawan railway station - 30 km from Rae Bareli and 47 km off Lucknow.

The 150 injured people have been transferred to nearby hospitals. Several relief vans are at the accident site helping with the relief and rescue efforts.

Minister of State Railways, Manoj Sinha said an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

"One engine and 2 coaches have been derailed. 40 people are reportedly injured and there may be some more casualties. Senior officials are already present at the spot," CPRO Northern Railways Neeraj Sharma said.

One of the coaches, which was a general compartment, has been crushed by the impact. The other was a guard compartment.

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Ramlal said state Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is "upset with the incident."

He announced that Rs. two lakh rupees would be provided to the families of the dead while Rs. 50,000 would be given to the kins of those injured.
