36 killed in Andhra Pradesh train derailment

Bhubaneswar, Jan 22 (IBNS): The Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Express, which derailed close to the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, left 36 people killed and injured about 54, media reports said on Sunday.

The accident took place around 11.30 pm on Saturday.

According to reports, eight coaches and the engine of the train derailed close to the Kuneru station when it was on its way towards Odisha's Bhubaneswar city from Jagdalpur.

Two sleeper coaches- S7 and S8- have been badly affected due to the deadly mishap.

Railway's relief teams were rushed to the spot and rescue operation commenced after the incident occurred.

"Total 4 accident relief vans rushed from different places, rescue and relief operations underway. Priority is treatment,shifting of injured passengers to nearest hospital," the East Coast Railways tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condoled the loss of lives due to the derailment of Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Express train.

“My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones due to the derailment of Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Express. The tragedy is saddening," PM Modi said.

"I pray for a speedy recovery of all those injured due to the train accident," he said.

He said the Railway Ministry is monitoring situation.

"The Railway Ministry is monitoring the situation very closely and is working to ensure quick rescue and relief operations," the Prime Minister said.

Meanwhile, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced compensation of Rs. two lakh each for the kin of those killed and Rs. 50,000 for injured, media reports said.

In addition to this, AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced Rs. 5 lakh compensation for families of those who got killed from his state in the accident.
